Jimmyo, the Yahoo concern about SO is much ado about nothing. SO is a holding company for a series of public utility companies and has no plans to expand their network, nor do they have the spectrum to do so. It's nonsense to expect MOT to give NXTL a U.S. exclusive to iDEN. In fact, NXTL controls the lion's share of the 800 MHZ so how could anyone compete in that bandwidth even if they wanted to? Answer: They couldn't. The cost of entry into digital wireless is similar, no matter how much potential capacity one has and gobs of customers are required to make the system pay. Thus, at the end of the day the little guy can't compete on an apples to apples basis.

SO has been there since the beginning and there's nothing new about what they are doing. I suspect that SO will have its hands full dealing with the deregulation of power in the U.S. I can't see how they'll have the time or the inclination to mount an effective campaign in the wireless telephone business outside of their current regional corner of the U.S., given that they'll be playing a new ball game in the power business. The world of electric utilities is in the process of being turned upside down in much the same way as the telephone utilities (T & its children). Electric power will soon be a commodity so SO must figure out how to maintain earnings in its core business.

Arnie

P.S. If you have to worry about something, worry about NXTL's ability to expand its network rapidly while insuring customer satisfaction. Why? Because that's the 500 pound gorilla that NXTL is currently wrestling with.

Jimmyo, Paul Blalock not in his office! Outrageous! Doesn't he know who you/we are! Well maybe he's "out there" learning the "art" of fine tuning an antenna. <G> I still haven't learned the fine art of "cut and paste" so I can't transfer my comments on this issue from the Yahoo board. Pick my comments up there. I fully agree with Arnie's assessment posted here (which I just read) and on Yahoo.
If I remember correctly (always a problem, and getting worse by the hour) the dual mode phone will be available early 1999.
Don't sweat it. It's only money (I don't believe I said that!). <VBG>
