MPEG-2 over twisted pairs..................................cedmagazine.com 9.2.98 NORWALK, Conn.-MPEG-2 digital video, Internet access and telephone service were simultaneously run over an existing telephone line from a Hart Telephone Co. central office to a residential customer in Hartwell, Ga., according to mPhase Technologies Inc. The demonstration of the mPhase Traverser Digital Video and Data Delivery System, at a press conference hosted by mPhase, Georgia Tech and Hart Telephone Co., was transmitted live via satellite from Georgia Public Broadcasting in Atlanta. The Hart customer viewed an MPEG-2 digital feed of the press conference over an ordinary twisted-pair, copper telephone line, without disruption of telephone service. At the same time, the family was able to browse the Internet at broadband speed. Prototypes of the Traverser system will be available next month, while version 1.0 with 80-channel capability will be in production and available for mass distribution in the spring, according to mPhase. Future system designs, according to mPhase, will accommodate 256 channels of digital video, including local broadcast signals, regionalized sports and movies-on-demand. ******************************************************************** Divicom has worked with US West since the beginning............... 9.2.98 NEW YORK-At the Telecom Business '98 conference in New York, U S WEST said that within five years, its customers can expect to see high-speed Internet access and digital cable TV service delivered over phone lines, fully integrated with phone service, Concurrent with the announcement, the Phoenix City Council was expected to consider a 15-year license that would allow U S WEST to deliver traditional phone services, high-speed Internet access and digital cable TV service over the same copper wires it uses to provide phone service. U S WEST plans to integrate these services and simplify them so that "webtone" and "videotone" become as common as telephone dialtone.
