Dear Stitch - thanks for the observations. It is quite a double take. If your descriptions are on target, Anwar is a genuine religious person [as opposed to a fundamentalist.] While you and I may feel MM sounds sophoomoric, I don't think one can underestimate the power of "The True Believer" [a la Hoffer.] I do agree the Malays are moderate [I gather the educational level is fairly high] and hopefully will be enough to prevent the country from falling into extreme fundamentalism or the kind of racism witnessed in Indonesia. best, Bosco
