WebTV: Watched and watching
Microsoft Corp.'s WebTV reportedly is collecting users' Web site viewing habits and reporting them. The polling results are offered to advertisers to help them target messages, according to a report by ZDnet. "We have a whole department that does nothing but look at the information," WebTV president Steve Perlman told an interviewer. "If someone is watching a car ad, we can send them to the closest car dealership on the Web." An analyst with Forrester Research Inc. told ZDnet, "I don't think people understand the extent of this. It's like having a video recorder on them 24 hours a day."
