This LU/NEC news could turn out to be good. NEC is a major Rambus partner and the only one to have been delivering products for a long period (to Nitendo).

Hitachi Cable to make Rambus chip package material

TOKYO, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Hitachi Cable Ltd said
on Thursday it would start production in the autumn of material
it has developed for use in the packaging of Rambus dynamic
random-access memories (RDRAM).

Hitachi Cable said in a statement it would have capacity to
produce 50 million units per month of the new material by the
end of 1999.

The new packaging material for Rambus memories was jointly
developed by Hitachi Ltd and Hitachi cable, based on
BGA (ball grid array) packaging technology developed by Tessera
of the United States, it said. Hitachi owns 51.4 percent of
Hitachi Cable.

The new material will boost productivity of packaging
material and achieve low-cost packaging, the statement said.
Rambus DRAM has been selected as Intel Corp's INTC.O main
memory for new personal computers, it said.

Hitachi Cable targets annual sales of the new material and
packages using the new material of more than 20 billion yen in
the year to March 2001, it said.
