Gemplus to Launch RFID Tag Division at ScanTech '98 Electronic Tags, Labels, and Readers Offer Innovative and Secure Identification and Tracking REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1998-- Gemplus(R) today announced that it will launch its new RFID Tag Division for the Americas and present a range of RFID tag solutions at ScanTech '98, September 14-16, 1998, at the Rosemont Convention Center in Chicago. A smart RFID tag is a small module that includes a microchip and an engraved antenna with read-only or read/write capabilities. Smart RFID labels are the low-cost ultra-thin version of a tag that is used for industrial purposes to identify or track everything from clothing, perfume, and containers, to luxury items such as designer watches. They can be inserted into any material or packaging, and are easy to handle and available in volume for automated insertion. Tags and labels contain a unique identification number that can be read through most common materials, including paper, wood, plastic, concrete, and paint. Unlike barcodes, RFID technology does not require contact or line-of-sight At ScanTech'98, Gemplus will present its long-range GemWave(TM) RFID reader, a fixed reading station that can read smart labels and tags from a distance of up to three feet. It can be used for tracking garments moving through an industrial laundry facility, containers moving on a conveyor belt, or luggage as it moves through an airline's baggage handling system. GemWave readers can be connected to a standard PC or to a portable terminal, and couplers can be integrated into different portable terminals. Handheld readers and couplers for OEMs will also be shown. Gemplus will also show several RFID solutions it has developed with companies in Gemplus' Value-Added Reseller program. One such solution uses a smart tag attached to garments and uniforms for rental tracking and automated sorting. Another solution to be shown demonstrates the use of smart labels in waste management control. To enhance security and tracking of vehicles, Gemplus is currently working with one of its partners to develop a solution that would make it possible to place a smart label inside a car's windshield. The smart label would carry such information as the vehicle's registration number, chassis number, and owner and insurer information. ''Smart tags and labels are based on RFID, an extremely powerful and versatile technology that allows a diverse range of objects to be identified, tracked and managed,'' said David Graziani, Gemplus' sales director for tag products in the Americas. ''I am proud to say that Gemplus is the most advanced designer and producer of these products. A fact that is attested to by the several million GemWave smart labels currently in use today in applications throughout the world.''
