Thai monk hands over gold donations to help out government

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - To help the government overcome its economic crisis, a Buddhist monk has donated 800 pounds of gold worth $3.9 million that he collected from donors.

The 87-year-old Phra Maha Bua Yanasampanno collected the donations from overseas Thais as well as his devotees throughout the country. He turned over the gold on Wednesday.

The popular monk from the northeastern province of Udorn Thani donated 400 pounds of gold and $1.2 million in cash to Thailand's central bank in July.

Thailand has been plagued by a financial crisis since an economic slowdown last year.
