LSI Logic is First Merchant Chip House to License Digital Theater
System Technology

MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- A new DVD (digital video
disk) decoder chip that can output DTS (Digital Theater Systems)
surround data streams, has been introduced by LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI).
The new L64021C chip uses DTS technology that enables consumer
electronic manufacturers to develop consumer DVD players that
accurately play back movie soundtracks encoded with DTS Digital
Surround.

LSI Logic is the first merchant semiconductor manufacturer to license
this technology from Digital Theater Systems, Inc., the leading
supplier of digital sound for motion pictures, including blockbuster
films such as "Jurassic Park" and "Titanic."

This DTS system is based on an encode/decode specification capable of
delivering 5.1 channels of up to 24-bit/96K audio. The L64021 decoder
sends DTS formatted audio output through the Sony-Philips Digital
Interface (SPDIF) for decoding in a separate audio receiver. A new
generation of DVD decoders from LSI Logic, which will process DTS
Digital Surround on-chip, will also be available in 1999.
