Not that it makes much difference, but I think Pirelli has a U.S. division. Probably no need to relocate to Italy.

the entire fiber market is still growing fast.

Competition from cheap yen, combined with Asian softness, and a rapid expansion in capacity is hurting profits at the moment. If you really believe in fiber and want a good company with a solid core of technology and a 100 year plus operating history, you can pick up Corning (GLW) here at fire sale prices. Almost a pure play on fiber and photonics. They are probably the lowest cost producer of fiber in the world, although they are getting hurt by turmoil in Asia and the currency markets. They are not glitzy like Ciena. They invented fiber and are expanding their capabilities in optoelectronics. Check them out.
