Lucent Digital Video Announces First
Shipments of New MPEG-2 Dual
Encoder and New High Definition
Encoder At IBC '98

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1998-- Lucent Digital Video, a
wholly-owned venture of Lucent Technologies, today announced the initial commercial shipments of
its new MPEG-2 dual encoder for standard definition broadcast, the EVA-200, at IBC '98 here.

Lucent Digital Video also announced a modular HD encoder, the HDC-100, and the HDEC-100
HD decoder. The EVA-200 dual encoder delivers complete video and audio encoding for two
programs on one co mpact circuit card. It is a two-channel standard-definition encoding system that
operates using MPEG-2 main profile/main level (4:2:0) up to 480 x 720 x 29.97 Hz or can be
configured for professional profile main level (4:2:2). Similar in performance to Lucent Digital
Video's EVA-100, at a lower per-channel cost, the EVA-200 is available with either analog or
digital interfaces. It includes stereo audio (either Dolby Digital or Musicam) for transmission for each
engine with MPEG-2 transport stream processing and multiplexing.

The HDC-100 is a modular HD board that can be inserted into Lucent's MPEG-2 Digital Video
System (DVS) developed by Lucent Digital Video. The only field upgradable MPEG-2 encoder on
the market, the DVS is also the first HDTV encoder to be commercially delivered with the SMPTE
310M interface. Lucent's DVS allows broadcasters and video transport service providers to
seamlessly upgrade from standard definition to high definition through hot pluggable modules and
allows automatic fail-over switching to redundant back-up modules, assuring operational reliability
for the entire system. The HDC-100 is an HD controller that coordinates and controls three
dual-channel EVA-200 MPEG-2 encoding modules for HD, including preprocessing and telecine
detection. It has a SMPTE 292M video input and can handle 1080i or 720p HD video formats
within 292 framing. Its audio processing for HDTV supports external Dolby 5.1 connections. The
HDEC-100 decodes one HDTV-resolution program in 1080i, 720p, or 480i formats with on-board
AC-3 audio decoding (2.0) and IEC-958 output support for an external 5.1 decoder.

Lucent Technologies and Harris Corp.
Demonstrate FlexiCoder Use in
Digital TV Transmission At IBC '98
Conference

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1998-- Lucent Digital Video, a
wholly-owned venture of Lucent Technologies, and Harris Broadcast Division will demonstrate an
innovative digital television transmission solution at the IBC '98 conference here.

The demonstration will show Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (COFDM)
transmission using a Harris FlexiCoder(tm) unit and a Harris COFDM modulator, connected by a
Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) interface.

The demonstrations will take place at the Harris Booth No. 10.321.

Lucent Digital Video provides to Harris the MPEG-2 digital video encoder that Harris sells under
the FlexiCoder name.

The highly adaptable, reliable FlexiCoder supports all types of network interfaces, and is an ideal
solution for the growing DVB market. The FlexiCoder is the only MPEG-2 encoder on the market
that can be ''hot-swapped'' while on-air. Its economic upgrade path allows broadcasters to move
from standard definition to high definition with addition of a single module.

''Today's global broadcaster wants a 'one-size-fits-all' MPEG-2 encoder that will play as reliably in
their network operation center in New York as it does in their Paris affiliate, with interfaces for all
modes of DTV transmission,'' said Jay Adrick, Vice President of Harris Broadcast Division. ''The
DVB interface is another clear demonstration of the FlexiCoder's versatility.''

The FlexiCoder is available in two basic configurations, and supports interfaces for DVB/SPI
(Synchronous Parallel Interface), DVB/ASI (Asynchronous Serial Interface), SMPTE 310M, dual
DS-3, dual E3, STM-I, and OC-3, and is engineered for remote network management.

''Customers who want to leverage their investment in MPEG-2 encoding equipment now have
another reason to look at the FlexiCoder,'' said Andreas Papanicolaou, President of Lucent Digital
Video. ''Our Bell Labs engineers have designed equipment that will work with any network
anywhere, anytime. This demonstration at IBC '98 is another example of what Harris and Lucent are
doing to bring digital television to the world's broadcasters.''
