Maximum Speed-Managing Hyper-growth.M.Dell's speech at Comerica Economic Forum. Location-Anatole Hotel,Dallas on 09/10/98 Soctt,OT -- Mohan will you try to post a transcript from Michael Dell's talk over the noon hour? I'll be in a meeting. Yet, I find that I learn a lot more from an entrepreneur like Michael Dell than from most other leaders and teachers. Well I couldn't find any transcripts of the speech but here are some highlights, hope this helps. ================================================ Subject of the speech:Maximum Speed-Lessons learned from managing hyper-growth. 1.Dell compared to other large cap companies of the world 82% grew revenue by 10% last year 11 of them grew their revenue 30% last year.1 company managed to grow +50% and DELL is the name of the company. Along the same line Michael said that the first 8 years DELL grew by 80% on the average and last 6 years the company grew by 60% and with only 8% of the market share DELL thinks there are plenty of room for growth going forward. Also Dell has been growing their profits faster than the revenue growth. 2.DELL was the best performing equity last year, last 3 years, last 5 years and last 10 years, bar none. 3.DELL-Hired 8000 new employees last year, and hired 2900 people during last quarter.Michael invited the audience to come on down to Austin if they are looking for a job as DELL is hiring across the board including engineering, manufacturing, sales, marketing, finance and everything else in between. 4.Contribution to Texas economy-30,000 jobs and added 4 billion to the state. 5.Managing growth and growth strategies. Talked about various techniques DELL employs to manage growth including Prioritization,Segmentation,Segmentation economics,Cash flow,Cost of Capital Vs ROIC,global growth strategies, the internet etc etc.. 6.Spoke about the mistakes Dell has made over the years and how Dell has learned from these mistakes, one of which was growing 127% a year and how they had to face tremendous headaches coping with problems of this hyper growth a year later. 7.Said DELL does not believe in following the competitors but rather Dell believes in building their own path. While speaking about the hyper-growth DELL is experiencing and how they manage it successfully he recalled an incident a while back where a 'noted' analyst on Wall Street wrote an article in Business Week telling the world how 'DELL is all tapped out of this mail order business',mind you he wrote this in Business Week when DELL was doing about 150 million in business-Oh well so much for the pundits,eh? There was also a question & answer session at the end of the meeting and here are a few as I recall them. 1.Y2K-Will Dell benefit? MD thinks at least 1/3rd of the corporate PCs will be replaced on account of Y2K. He also these there will be a massive upgrade of IT infrastructure among corporations replacing old with the new.He said DELL has already started seeing the effects from large corporations and he thinks as we get closer to year 2000 DELL thinks even small and medium size companies will follow the large corporations in replacing the old machines. 2.Next Dell related breakthrough? Broadband technology-DSL,Cable modems etc.DELL is working with several companies right now to bring out these technologies to the market. Another exciting thing that Dell is working on is 64 bit computing and 3rd generation cellular/wireless technology.Expect these a few years down the line perhaps by 2002/3. ================================================== I suggest you listen to it,takes about 45 min to an hour but it is worth it.comerica.com
