09/10 11:51 MultiMediaCard Association Doubles in Size; International Companies <SNDK.O>
MultiMediaCard Association Doubles in Size; International Companies Back New Memory Card Standard MUNICH, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1998--The new MultiMediaCard Association, established in May 1998, with 14 industry-leading companies, has more than doubled in size with 15 new firms joining including major manufacturers such as Sony and Advanced Micro Devices. The announcement was made today at a press conference held by SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ:SNDK). SanDisk, along with Siemens AG of Germany, introduced the ultra-small, removable memory card in November 1997, as a new storage standard for mobile phones, audio players, voice recorders and other small, portable electronic devices. The 29 companies in the association, many of whom are developing products that use the MultiMediaCard, include major consumer electronics manufacturers such as NEC, Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, Hitachi and Sony. Members of the association currently manufacture such products as cellular phones, smart phones, handheld PCs, digital audio players, digital voice recorders and video gaming devices. Wes Brewer, chairman of the association's marketing committee, said, "The steady growth of the association, along with an increase in design wins for the MultiMediaCard, indicates strongly that the MultiMediaCard has extensive global support. "This support is gaining momentum because the MultiMediaCard has the ability to bring genuine storage capability for the first time to so many different products. In so doing, it is enabling many new features in those products and prompting manufacturers to explore how they can use the card in new, mass market applications." Brewer is director of marketing at SanDisk. Christine Born, chairwoman of the association's technical committee, said, "We are currently enhancing the MultiMediaCard specification based on improvements recommended by association members. Since companies in the association represent many diverse applications, the MMCA provides a non-competitive forum to ensure that the standard evolves consistent with their needs. Recent proposals that have been voted on will be rolled into a new revision at the association's next meeting in November." Born is director, marketing, MultiMediaCard at Siemens AG. Brewer added, "It is very noteworthy that many of our new members are coming from Europe. Nine of the 29 companies in the association are headquartered in Europe." Bengt Stavenow and Tarmo Jukarainen are co-chairmen of the association. Stavenow is development manager, system engineering, specifications and IPR at Ericsson, and Jukarainen is product manager, communications at Nokia. The full membership list of the association includes Advanced Micro Devices, Altec Computer Systems, AMP, Berg Electronics, BMG Entertainment New Technologies, Canon, Ericsson, Hitachi, Hosiden, ITT Cannon, JAE Electronics, LG Semicon, LinkUp Systems, Motorola, Multisonic Interactive, NEC, Nokia, Pontis GmbH, QUALCOMM, SanDisk, SCM Microsystems, Rohm, Sempac, Shuttle Technology, Siemens AG, Silicon Storage Technology, Sony, Speed Tech USA and Yamaichi Electronics. The world's first mobile product designed to use the MultiMediaCard -- the Nokia 9110 Communicator -- was introduced in March 1998. Thus far, the solid-state memory card has design activity in more than 15 small mobile platforms that SanDisk expects will be introduced in 1998 and 1999. The organization, which has established a web site at: mmca.org, has a general membership meeting on Nov. 23-24 in San Diego. The association's phone number is 408/253-0441. Its email
