So the $64 question is where to
from computers. Certainly the business model ought to be transferrable to other
products. What products will work with this kind of model?

Exactly the same thing that's been going through my mind. I agree that DELL is not a technology company and also agree that their model should be transferable. I'm still struggling to see where the next play would be...stereo/home cinema equipment???

I think CISCO is trying to move to this model. The trouble is that it doesn't work well to implement half the model or mix and match with another model. You need to set the goal and ride over the bumps until you reach it.

The only products that would work with this paradigm would be rapidly changing designs that offer real improvements over previous models. As well, cost should remain stable or fall.

I don't know if there are too many products that fit this category outside the obvious ones like cell phones, smart-cards, PDAs etc.

Chuzz:

Vaccum cleaner ORECK. Just like Dell. Sold direct, no middleman. Quality products. The company has competition from every corner, but the product is excellent. However, it has inventory and prebuilt. I think the company is privately held.

Paul.

RE: BTO model

It is said in the management literature that Toyota built most of its cars to order in Japan (but not in the U.S.) It is this market that made it necessary for Toyota to develop the JIT production systems which have spread rapidly in Japan and less swiftly elsewhere.
