Jeff-

"A majority of R&D spending is being focused on the new South Hampton and Raleigh, NC facilities. There must be something to Raleigh, can anyone shed some light on what kind of growth is going on in that geographical part of the country?"

Good post. I live near Raleigh and the Research Triangle Park (RTP) has become a Mecca for high tech companies in areas of computer design and manufacturing as well as telecommunications. RTP is considered a premier site for many of the high tech firms because of three major universities (North Carolina State, UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke) are within 50 miles of the Park, making business recruitment for local people ideal. IBM, Northern Telecom, Cisco and others has large facilities here and more than 25% of the jobs for the Wake county come from businesses in RTP. Several sites has opened over the past few years which are dedicated to pure research and development; everything from Internet services, computer software and manufacturing. SMTC has a Regional Sales Office in Morrisville(down the road from RTP).

P.S. SMTC held very well today. The stock has stayed strong despite the massive selling in many tech stocks.
