A number of large companies in both Japan and Korea have typically judged themselves (and been judged by investors) on market share, not profitability. Once dominant market share is established, prices can be raised to ensure profits, or so the theory goes. This approach has lead to some extremely irrational business decisions from the point of view of Western business people and, on a larger scale, to at least part of the Asian economic mess.
