This is what I was refering to, the major telcos have been providing Egypt with the latest in backbone infrastructure, fiber optics, switching, wireless, etc. Now, what makes Digitcom's entry beautiful is that Digitcom does not have to absorb the costs of this infrastructure! From the press release:

''Telecom Egypt was attracted by IP telephony's ability to increase the capacity of existing infrastructure at a very low cost,'' explained Jimmy Chin, Digitcom CEO. ''Our IntraVoice technology can leverage the significant investment they have made recently in a major modernization of their switched network.

Translation: the big boys laid in the big pipes, Digitcom helps put a lot more traffic through those expensive pipes, lessening the overall cost while reaping big profit.

And unlike Lucent, who comes in, lays in the pipes then goes home, Digitcom is in the services end, transacting minutes day after day, year after year. What a deal!

Anybody catch this?...from Lucent press release...

Lucent Technologies has been selected by Telecom Egypt to participate in the expansion of Egypt's telecommunications network, which will double telephone ownership in the country over the next five years.

100% growth in telephone ownership in 5 years. This is the potential of an "emerging market".

This growth is on top of the growth of IP Telephony.

It looks like they are really trying to grow their telecom system within the country....that means that there will be be more people to call other countries.....

Egypt Telecom, as part of its plans to double the nationwide
telephone density over the next five years, has signed a "Nile
Vision" frame contract with Alcatel for 800,000 lines.
Currently, there are 7.25 lines per person in Egypt. A
first-phase contract calling for the supply of 100,000 lines of
Alcatel 1000 network systems was also signed.

Included in the Nile Vision project along with the
ATM-ready switches are SDH optical fiber rings and
wireless subscriber access networks, both of which Alcatel
will be supplying. With the new technologies, Egypt Telecom
will be able to offer such advanced services as ISDN, frame
relay and ATM cell delivery.

For more than two decades, Alcatel has been a significant
contributor to Egypt's telecoms infrastructure. Among the
company's contributions are more than 1.3m Alcatel 1000
subscriber lines, 2,500 km of optical fiber links, and 1,200 km
of microwave links. Infrastructure for the country's first
GSM network was supplied by Alcatel in record time last
year.

International telecoms traffic from Egypt runs over several
high-capacity optical fiber systems, with Alcatel acting as
the major supplier: the SEA-ME-WE family (linking Egypt to
Asia and Europe) as well as FLAG and more recently
Aletar (providing service to Lebanon and Syria). For
space-based direct-to-home broadcasting, the Egyptian
Radio and TV Union has ordered Nilesat: Alcatel is building
the satellite's payload.

And for an extension of Cairo's Metro, Alcatel has been
asked to supply telecoms systems.

Please explain to me how our deal w/Telecom Egypt fits with what Lucent is doing. There must be a relationship.Maybe the purposes are different but an explanation would help me. Why are we doing that Lucent isn't doing and vice versa. Am I the only one in this quandary? If you know the answer then please keep it real simple so I can understand it.Thanks.
Why does Telecom Egypt need both of us?
