Well I don't know if he repeated it per say...but we were talking about this exact type of box long ago.

DTV/DBS/IP box that has a cable modem or ADSL built right in...along with a HD for WINce and a spare gig or two for some vid storage.
Nuttin' new.

Smart Storage Solutions DVD ROM Kit...

What's Old Is New

Smart Storage Solutions was among the first companies to offer a 2x drive in its DVD ROM Kit. Unfortunately, not much has changed since the company first introduced this $239-direct kit about a year ago, and what remains is some decidedly average hardware.

Installing the kit is simple enough, although the three-quarter-length decoder card may prove a tight fit in crowded systems. The kit's photocopied quick-start guide and instruction manual are also a little ragged-looking, but acceptably thorough. Oddly enough, our evaluation kit came with an extra instruction manual and driver disk, both labeled "Pacific Digital" (a competing DVD-kit manufacturer). These inexplicable inclusions are sure to mystify novice and experienced users alike.

Smart Storage's combination of a Hitachi GD-2000 2x/20x drive and CineMaster decoder card seems fine on the surface--especially given that the NewCom kit uses the same drive. However, the CineMaster uses the older-style video-inlay method to deliver MPEG - 2 video, which relies on your existing graphics card to scale the images. If you have a powerful system with a state-of-the-art graphics card, this may not be a problem. However, on the 166MHz Pentium test system, we were unable to display full-screen video without serious degradation in playback quality. Even when scaled down to a half-screen window, DVD video suffered from noticeable artifact and haircomb effects.

The irony is that the drive itself performed fairly well on the benchmark tests. Its scores were right in line with those of the Creative and NewCom drives, although its 17 percent CPU utilization at a 550K/sec transfer rate was the highest of the four drives tested.

Things aren't much better on the software side. Although we liked the different sizes available for the video-control panel, the controls themselves lack that intuitive VCR-like design. What's more, this is the only kit that doesn't come with any DVD titles. There's nothing particularly glamorous in any of the other kits, but a little starter software is a welcome touch nonetheless.

LSI Logic's Complete System Solution Selected for Hitachi Digital Terrestrial

Set - Top Box and Integrated TVs

BRACKNELL, England, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI), a leader in providing complete system solutions for digital consumer products, today announced that it will supply Hitachi Home Electronics, UK, with a comprehensive channel-to-source digital terrestrial silicon solution for Hitachi's newest line of digital set - top boxes and integrated TVs.

The highly integrated chipset makes it easy for digital TV designers to quickly produce a performance-optimized digital terrestrial solution at a very competitive cost. The complete front-to-backend offering includes a single-chip 2k/8k COFDM demodulator with FFT, an FEC, an integrated Transport Demux and 32-bit MIPS CPU, and an MPEG-2 A/V decoder, enabling products with superior broadcast reception.

Hitachi's recently announced C32W40DTN (32") and C28W40DTN (28") widescreen integrated digital terrestrial TVs (idTV) and DTR801 DVB digital terrestrial set - top box will feature LSI Logic's chipset throughout. The Hitachi products will be in the retail shops later this year, in time for the U.K. digital terrestrial TV launch. Because they are based on LSI's 2k/8k COFDM demodulator, Hitachi is poised to make their products available for broader European consumption, as digital terrestrial TV rolls out across Europe which requires 8k demodulation.

"Hitachi's choice of LSI Logic's complete digital terrestrial system solution is an important endorsement for our products," said Simon Dolan, vice president of marketing for LSI Logic's consumer division. "They are leaders in quality consumer electronics and at the forefront of bringing the newest technology into the public domain at affordable prices."

"This design win is very exciting for us. It demonstrates LSI's strength across all areas of digital TV design, from the COFDM through to the Transport Demux and MPEG-2 A/V decoder," said Trevor Neal, market development manager, LSI Logic Europe. "What we've been able to offer Hitachi is a complete, highly integrated solution and a roadmap for future integration," he continued. "LSI Logic is enabling a new era of consumer products."
