I don't think COMS is for sale....at all. Extremely tough poison pill, Deleware corporation, rotating board, new Pres/COO. Sounds like they want to stay independent.

FORE is a leader in LAN ATM.......little if any presence in the WAN. WAN ATM leaders are ASND (through Cascade, NN, and CSCO. COMS' CB9000 is targeted at the enterprise for LANs - both ATM and packet (FDDI, Gigabit, Fast Enet). CB9000 will also support SONET for WAN connections. CB9000 is a platform that is meant to last for 7 - 10 years, so software and features will be phased in on a continual basis. Companies buying it are buying the future proofing of the architecture and their comfort with COMS.

If you listen to E.B., converged networks is the future of 3Com - part of converged networks is allowing the capability of voice over the internet (VOIP. Major development effort of COMS is VOIP with Total Control and other products - they are attempting to work with all service providers here.
