I was just checking my brokers news pages and found the following. I don't remember seeing any pointers to this announcement yesterday. It looks like real big news to me and I'm sure I would have remembered seeing it.

HOUSTON (Dow Jones)--Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) signed an agreement with China's National Computer Software & Technology Service Corp. to jointly develop COSIX, a 64-bit UNIX operating system for China based on Compaq's digital UNIX technology.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.

In a press release Thursday, Compaq said the initiative also covers joint development and marketing and said National Computer Software & Technology Service has the sole charter by the Chinese Ministry of Information Industries to provide COSIX.

Compaq said the Chinese-branded UNIX system will be initially delivered on Compaq's Alpha Systems and will also be available on the IA-64 platform.

Compaq develops and markets desktop and personal computers, workstations, servers and peripheral products.
