Mark,

We are on the same track. I don't see God removing our free will otherwise we end up as robots or slaves which would be the case if He intervened in every situation. He doesn't yell orders at us all the time and has provided instructions to follow and in the Old Testament, the Jews as I see it, were to be an example for the rest of the world to follow. Moses was given God's laws to give to the people.
Regarding those destroyed on God's orders the verse that comes to mind... Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Here, free will comes into play again. God says don't, there are consequences. We reap what we sow. Eventually God says enough.

God bless,
John
