No, it would not. For the second quarter AMD estimated production (in units) of 2M to 2.5M. Most analysts pegged the number closer to 2 than 2.5, but AMD actually sold 2.7M.

That last sentence is curious, considering that AMD was below earnings expectations in Q2.

This quarter, AMD originally estimated 3 to 3.5M units, but recently changed its estimate to "at least 3.5M." I think your second hypothesis about what's going on is the accurate one: 2) AMD is learning to be more conservative with pre-announcements.

My feelings as well. But once again, above-average numbers in units shipped means little if they can't be sold at a high enough ASP. On the other hand, Intel predicted a higher ASP for the second half of 1998. AMD could also be seeing this as well, especially since AMD ditched their "25% lower price than equivalent Intel" strategy in favor of a pricing strategy that revolves around the entire platform.

As for AMD's conservatism, this is a very good sign as long as AMD can meet or beat earnings expectations like Intel.

MORE K6's MORE LOSSES. When will AMD realize that they have to PRODUCE LESS K6's in order to be profitable.

Petz:
I think AMD has to be conservative right now to build some credibility. They will almost certainly need to issue stock by the middle of 1999 unless Sharptooth is just a raging success. By being conservative now, they can hype the K7 and obtain capital at the lowest possible cost.

As an AMD shareholder, I'm all for this. The K7 just might be the ticket to 30% market share, but I'm not holding my breath.

Would appreciate everyone telling me I'm wrong, but I don't think so.
