Internet Gaming in the Land Down Under

Even though some US policymakers wish to ban Internet gambling, other countries are thinking along different lines. In New South Wales, the ''Carr Government'' is considering the legalization of Internet gambling, which would allow NSW gaming operators to set up virtual casinos for the booming number of online players. Internet gambling has grown into a worldwide industry, generating more than $1 billion a year. The Australian Gaming Minister, Mr. Face, has recognized that rather than attempting to prohibit Internet gambling altogether, it may be more effective to control it through legalization. The government claims it can more closely monitor the industry by licensing local operators and collecting tax revenue, a spokesman for Mr. Face said. The legislation proposal may be introduced in the next session of Parliament.

The first government run online casino

As soon as next week, the Caribbean island nation of Dominica will launch a casino-style Web-gambling site owned and run by the government. This undermines U.S. policies to shut down the industry at home. Already today several online gambling operations operates from Dominica but this is the first government run operation, ''All licensees in the country pay a small percentage of their revenues to the government as license fees,'' Said Gary Borglund, president of the Minneapolis-based Global Games, the software and gaming-services company that helped set up the state-run page. ''I think when [policy makers] realized how much they were missing out on, they decided to become licensees themselves.''
