Jim Gray is a near god in the database world. His book Transaction Processing : Concepts and Techniques is as near to a bible as you'll find in the field. Had an interesting career path, Tandem - DEC - independent- Microsoft. Bill would have got him one way or another. You'll never catch me saying Microsoft doesn't have good people working for them.

I'd second Bearded One's assessment, very smart and very nice. Good speaker, too, though I've seen him get a little futurological at times. My understanding from people on the other side is that his lab is pretty small and research oriented. He does project reviews on SQL server, and is no doubt available for consulting, but isn't involved in day-to-day development work or supervision.

Cheers, Dan.
