Tiernan's new DSNG encoder....................

Background......................

tiernan.com

The TE300 is an SCPC MPEG-2 encoder for general purpose DSNG. The video inputs are either analog composite video (PAL or NTSC) or serial digital video. The two stereo audio inputs are either analog or serial digital audio. The compressed digital output is a DVB compliant MPEG-2 Transport Stream.

The TE300 compresses the incoming video with a limited rate, frame-based MPEG-2 Main Profile @ Main Level algorithm using the C-Cube MicroSystems VideoRISC processor array.

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Tiernan Communications, one of the world's foremost designers and manufacturers of MPEG-2 and ATSC digital television compression equipment and systems, introduced its newest product, the TE600 High Performance MPEG-2 DSNG Encoder at the IBC98 Exhibit in Amsterdam, September 11-15. Deliveries of the new generation encoder are scheduled to begin in October.

Making this announcement, Tiernan Vice President Keith Dunford said, "Our new TE600 provides a new standard in price and performance. The TE600 provides the highest quality video and audio and has features that reduce the workload on operators in field operations of single- and multi-channel digital TV signals. The TE600 is ideal for mobile applications such as DSNG."

The TE600 DSNG ENCODER is a high performance, flexible television broadcast encoder with a built-in QPSK satellite modulator supporting both 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 profiles according to the NTEG-2 standard ISO/IEC 13818-2. It features an easy-to-read, illuminated LCD status and control panel with push-button controls, and is available with a remote control function (using ASCII commands) via the EIA-232 remote control port. The front panel has new, quick set-up features that allow frequency and satellite parameters to be pre-set at the base of operations, relieving the work-load of field personnel at the transmission site.

The TIERNAN TE600 ENCODER is a powerful MPEG-2 encoder designed to handle the processing of a broad range of video and audio signals in a wide range of applications. The TE600 is MPEG/DVB compliant, and is designed to be the industry benchmark for reliability, performance and price.

Tiernan Communications, Inc. designs, develops and manufactures a full line of digital television compression and transmission equipment. Tiernan equipment is used worldwide by broadcasters, cable operators, and common carriers to achieve the highest levels of quality, performance and economy in the distribution of digital television programming. The company's products are essential in digital television operations, satellite news gathering, and in the distribution of television programming via satellite and terrestrial networks. Tiernan products meet or exceed standards of quality. More than 600 Tiernan digital television systems are in use with some 200 TV networks and service providers in 25 countries.

Hitachi set to beat Sony in DVD camcorders.......................

ibc-daily.co.uk

Hitachi chases Sony
Rumours have been coming out of Japan that Hitachi is racing to beat Sony to the line with a DVD-based disk camcorder and aims to get a product out some time next year, writes Gideon Summerfield.
Based on the DVD-RAM version of the format, the camera is said to be able to record an hour of video on each side of the disk. If true, the camera will reach the market at least a year ahead of Sony's version. It's not clear, however, what level the new Hitachi camera will be pitched at.

Speaking at IBC, Bernd Kaltenschnee, European marketing manager for Hitachi Denshi (Stand 7.630), admitted that disk camera technology was in development in Hitachi's R&D labs but could give no further details.

In any case, the development is more likely to be carried out by sister company, Hitachi Limited. It has led innovations at consumer level, introducing the first disk camcorder last year. The tiny MPEGCam records around 20 minutes of MPEG1 video on an internal magnetic hard-disk.

Divi boxes by year end......................................

ibc-daily.co.uk

DiviCom opens revenue door to cable operators
DiviCom Inc, a specialist in the area of digital TV compression, has introduced an interactive set-top box controller called InterSect, which it says will help cable operators differentiate themselves from Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) providers and create new revenue streams.
InterSect enables operators to deliver reliable TCP/IP traffic to client devices - which introduces the interactive applications Web browsing, e-mail, stock ticker and EPGs to cable audiences. DiviCom presents InterSect as the first DVB/DAVIC head end component designed to control DVB/DAVIC based set-top boxes. It supports the out-of-band DVB/DAVIC specification to allow cable companies to deliver video and data at the same time. One example of such an integrated service would be the bundled transmission of a soccer match with statistics on the players: subscribers will be able to 'browse and watch' simultaneously.

DiviCom's development team is currently working with a number of manufacturers who are creating DVB/DAVIC compliant set-top boxes, and will announce certification on the completion of interoperability testing. Cable operators will be able to buy the technology by the end of the year.

DiviCom president Tom Lookabaugh told the Daily News: "The technology is finally catching up with the dream. Combined with our MediaView encoder products, InterSect can help our customers expand their revenue streams. These standards-based products allow cable operators to create an infrastructure for delivering both high quality video entertainment and interactive data services to their home subscribers.

"Since 1993, interactive TV services have been promoted in the media, but home subscribers' access has been limited to EPGs and pay-per-view movie purchases," he added. "Internet content has increased dramatically. Set-top boxes are more intelligent. Standards such as DVB and DAVIC define how data will be delivered over two-way Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) connections. Data display formats such as Java and HTML are readily available and HFC networks are expanding.

"InterSect is making our vision a reality."
