PX,
Given (and its a huge given) the eventual availability of very high bandwidth, what do you need with a physical copy of anything that can be transmitted over that bandwidth?
If you can purchase a temporary or lifetime "license" to a musical catalog, feature film, software application, news magazine, etc granting access via web (or its successor) DVD or whatever becomes unnecessary. Except, possibly, as temporary storage.

Probably just a former hippie dreaming,

Yogi

PX,
<<However I can't visualize any mainstream demand drivers for this technology.>>
Actually, having a physical security barrier is a damn good idea. Individual password security is pretty much a joke to anyone with an idea of human nature. Birthdays, house numbers, telephone numbers, and very common post it notes attached to the desk drawer.
Give me access to 3 offices and I'll be inside a corporate network in 10 minutes or less. Ask your secretary, I'll wager she/he can figure out all your passwords unless you've given security serious thought.

Security paranoid,

Yogi
