US Questions Semi-conductor Industry

The US Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has asked the Korean government for detailed information on recent production cuts at Korean semi-conductor manufacturers, Samsung, LG, and Hyundai according to a high ranking official at the Korean FTC. The US is concerned that the production cut were negotiated between the three companies which would be in violation of anti-collusion rules under the fair trade laws. US FTC laws can be applied to foreign business that have production facilities or business operations in the US and serious violations such as collusion carry fines of up to US$100 million.

In reaction to these inquiries the Korean manufacturers have said that they made their decisions independently and that the timing of the cut backs were not co-ordinated.
