Pigboy - Re: " There has been some speculation that Intel may acquire a networking company (ie. 3Com)."

IF Intel acquired another networking company, 3COM should be the LAST one they need.

As you noted, Intel already has a strong NIC business which competes with 3COM - so that would not bring in any new technology.

The USRobotics Modem business appears to be a business that has 1 foot already in the toilet - and Intel's SoftModem initiative will flush the whole Modem business (as we know it) down the drain.

However, the Palm Pilot division - although using a non-Intel CPU - may be an attractive business ON ITS OWN - if it's for sale.

The Ascend Rumors would appear more promising. Ascend concentrates on RAS (Remote Access) Servers and ISP modem installations - WHICH IS OF DIRECT concern to Intel since that is the ON-RAMP most "home" users use for accessing the Internet.

Ascend also has the (former) Cascade frame relay and ATM business for long haul data transmissions.

Thus, none of this overlaps Intel's existing businesses.
