Trimble Wins Contract to Develop Next Generation Military GPS
Technology

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Trimble (Nasdaq: TRMB - news) announced today that it has been awarded a contract from the NAVSTAR joint Program Office (JPO) to research and develop next generation military Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The announcement was made at the Institute of Navigation GPS '98 Conference. Under the contract, Trimble will work to develop the next generation security device, Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM), for military avionics and ground handholds. This module will be integrated into Trimble's GPS Receiver Application Module (GRAM) technology already being developed under the
Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator (ACTD) contract for the Miniature Airborne GPS Receiver Upgrade (MAGRU).

Trimble's Aerospace group has been involved with SAASM efforts since its inception in 1992. It was Trimble's receiver and software that provided the design and test bed for the Key Data Processor, the heart of the security upgrade. At the same time, Trimble has participated in Navigation Warfare (NAVWAR) which was a developmental project leading to GPS modernization.

''We are extremely pleased to have been awarded the GRAM-SAASM contract,'' said Val Denniger, embedded sensors program director of Trimble's Military and Advanced Systems Group. ''Development projects such as these allow Trimble to share our GPS expertise and lay the foundation for next generation military receivers.''
