You make a good point, but read message number 2947 by jach re the Sprint announcement on Aug 24th. There are at least two ways to skin a cat these days. Competition between Csco/CIEN's IP/DWDM direct connect (i.e IP over Sonet but without the Sonet terminals) vs. Asnd/Pirelli's ATM over fiber. I am not an engineer either but I suspect these two alternatives will be argued extensively by each party and the RBOCs and CLECs will have to choose sides.
