Compaq Expands Its Internet Service and Support September 14, 1998, Issue: 807 Section: Service & Support Compaq expands activeAnswers site Joe Wilcox Houston -- Compaq Computer Corp. is rolling out this week expanded areas to its activeAnswers Web site. The extranet site, which launched in July, initially offered tools and resources around SAP R/3 and Web-based solutions. The new activeAnswers areas focus on electronic commerce, Oracle Data Marts, Microsoft Exchange Server and Check Point FireWall 1. The fee-based site is available at an introductory price of $1,695. "The activeAnswers site is built around specific partners' solutions," said George Favaloro, director of marketing for Compaq's Internet solutions unit. The site is designed to reduce the cost, risk and complexity of implementing these solutions, he said, whether the user is a customer or a VAR. The E-commerce area focuses on the planning, deployment and operation phases of electronic-commerce solutions. Features include capacity planning for Microsoft Server Commerce Edition; the ability to deploy Cybercash and PaylinX payment systems and an overview of the Distributed Internet Server Array. The Oracle Data Marts area offers tips on sizing and configuring storage, installation and tuning, and backup strategies. The Microsoft Exchange section explains how to size the solution, migrate data from legacy systems and recover from a disaster using Compaq technologies. Check Point FireWall 1 has primers on firewalls, virtual private networks and content filtering, as well as hardware and software configurations and tips for integration with Compaq Insight Manager. The areas cater to the growing number of enterprise solutions deployed on Compaq servers, the company said. Compaq estimates 36 percent of SQL Server and 46 percent of Oracle NT databases are deployed on Compaq systems, as well as 60 percent of the Microsoft Exchange seats and 43 percent of the Internet Information Server installations. Six of the eight largest ISPs are standardized on Compaq equipment, company officials said.
