Moterboards only have one USB port. Some motherboards have two USB connectors but they are both connected to the sane USB bus. Hence when I say one USB port I mean one USB bus, not the number of USB connectors. From a hardware stand point a motherboard could have more than one USB buses. However,existing operating systems can only support one USB bus. Hence it is a waste of time and money to add additional USB buses to a motherboard.

If by number of ports you mean number of USB connectors than a motherboard could have up to 127 ports. However, all I/O goes through one USB bus so you are not splitting your I/O load between different I/O controllers.
