* Late yesterday, COMPAQ COMPUTER CORP and MICROSOFT CORP
announced an alliance aimed at easing the way in which corporate
computer operating systems (OS) developed by the companies work
together. Under the alliance, Compaq, the Houston-based PC giant
which this year bought systems maker Digital Equipment Corp., will
license technology from Microsoft that is oriented to Microsoft's
NT OS for corporate networks. The technology will be used in
future versions of Compaq's Digital UNIX OS. Microsoft will
license software previously found only in Compaq's Tandem NonStop
Kernal system to be applied to future versions of NT. (Reuters

* Warburg Dillon Read said that it raised its rating on INTEL CORP
to buy from hold, while market sources said Merrill Lynch had kept
its intermediate and long-term ratings on Intel at neutral.
Warburg says still not convinced that Intel has returned to
long-term growth track, but believes stronger-than-expected 3Q
sales should give near-term boost. Warburg raising 1998 earnings
estimate to $3.12 per share from $3.00. Warburg raising 1999
earnings estimate to $3.90 per share from $3.60. (Reuters 09:57 AM

* Gruntal & Co. said it raised its 1998 earnings per share
estimate for INTEL CORP to $3.09 from $3.03. Analyst Mona Eraiba
