remote access terminal allows local switching within close vicinity of a calling area; based on TR008 and TR303 protocols where terminals that support 008 just local switching where else the latter can also intelligently differentiate data and voice calls in addition to many other features such as more ports etc. 5Es still come into play at the POPs.
