Jim,

What PacBell calls a smart chip is what is commonly referred to as a SIM card. The SIM card must contain flash memory as the one in my phone can hold my personal details as well as ~200 names and phone numbers. The SIM card is the thickness of a credit card ie much thinner than CF. There are two sizes of SIM card. fullsize and compact. My phone uses the full size card - looks exactly like a credit card except for a rectangular gold contact area containing 7 pads and of course the card has no magnetic strip. The manufacturer of my card appears to be Schlumberger.
