From the "Taking Profits" section of the October, 1998 issue of Money, page 81:

"What about Tellabs, the network developer that agreed to acquire fiber-optic equipment maker Ciena in June? By Aug. 13, Tellabs stock was up 24%, thanks in part to the buzz about Ciena; now the stock is back where we recommended it because of concerns about the deal. Our advice: Sit tight. Sure, Ciena pre-announced an earnings shortfall and then the loss of a potential AT&T order. But Ciena remains a good acquisition; there's enough fiber-optic business to make up for the AT&T disappointment. And Tellabs remains a quality franchise."

<CIEN is a leading edge with strong products and very cheap valuation because of the recent sell off. However one thing that bothers me is the ATT cancellation of their test of CIEN equipment. IF CSCO's largest carrier customer is ATT, and CSCO GSR 12000 router is being mostly tested and used with CIEN's DWDM stuff, does that mean CSCO will not be a big supplier to ATT for any next generation IP over DWDM fiber network? Does that mean Lucent with their DWDM and ASND with their ATM over DWDM( with NEC and Pirelli gears) will be big winners for the ATT account?>

as jockying to possible advantages in this new IP directly over dwdm field gets closer and closer to the finish line we'll likely see more;
although some newbies horses will get some spculative bets, majority still will go to the proven ones such as ciena; see thier current product line ups-

Wong, you need to read material on the battle of protocols. Some carriers use ATM over Sonet and some are intending to use IP over Sonet (Sprint). ATT is mostly ATM. It is not a matter of who has the best equipment. It is way more complicated than that.
