Monday September 14, 10:17 am Eastern Time Company Press Release Kanagawa Dental College Selects Newbridge Internetworking Solution to Support High-Speed Digital Imaging Applications for Teaching Lecture Presentation System Enhances Quality and Efficiency of Education Process KANATA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998-- Newbridge Networks (TSE:NNC. - news; NYSE:NN - news) today announced that Kanagawa Dental College in Japan has deployed the Newbridge(R) VIVID(tm) switched routing solution to support high-speed digital imaging applications for teaching. In addition to offering a lecture presentation system that students can access 24 hours a day, seven days a week via the World Wide Web, the network supports a knowledge database and e-mail services -- applications that enhance the quality and efficiency of the education process. Network design and consultation services for the Kanagawa Dental College network were provided by Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corporation (NTT) Kanagawa Corporate Sales Department's User Solution 2WG, a systems integrator. The high performance Multiprotocol over ATM (MPOA) based internetworking solution provided by Newbridge enables professors to post their multimedia lecture presentations on the Web, which students can access from personal computers. This enables students to access information prior to class and review what they have learned following their lectures. Another cost-saving advantage of the presentation system is that image files can be downloaded from the Web and viewed directly by the students. This avoids the potentially high costs associated with producing color copies and distributing the slides to hundreds of individuals. ''Since we are a medical school, we use images frequently in lectures,'' said Professor Toshio Morizane, Internal Medicine, Kanagawa University. ''Some people say that the university puts lectures on the Web to indulge our students, but you can't get everything out of a lecture just by reading it on the Web. What putting it on the Web really does is enhance the lecture because it allows you to put more information into the same 90 minutes.'' According to Professor Morizane, who played an instrumental role in the selection and deployment of the network, the state-of-the-art teaching applications made possible by the Newbridge switched routing solution contribute significantly to the learning process. Kanagawa Dental College was seeking a networking solution that would deliver consistent high bandwidth enabling the college to meet the growing demand for multimedia presentations and other state-of-the-art applications. ''The powerful, flexible, highly scalable internetworking solution being provided by Newbridge Networks was the logical choice because it enables large quantities of data to be transmitted quickly and reliably to multiple locations, without overloading the network,'' said Professor Morizane. The VIVID switched routing solution consists of CS1000 ATM switches, Yellow Ridge(tm) edge devices, Route Servers, a System Manager and the versatile, high-capacity Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36150 Access Switch. In addition to providing unlimited scalability and centralized management capabilities, the network is fast and reliable, two essential qualities for the type of high-bandwidth applications being used by the college. ''We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with Kanagawa Dental College to develop a networking solution that will contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of education in Japan,'' said Constantin Loudiadis, executive vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific, Newbridge Networks. ''The applications of this network are virtually endless and will serve as a pre-eminent model for teaching today and well into the future.''
