From a power consumption/heat point of view, I doubt the O2 could take 2 R10k's. The R12k could be better. The other design issue is the memory interface. The O2 can't take full advantage of the R10k at the moment. Unless they do a big re-design, I don't see how adding a 2nd CPU will be of much use. They could use 2 R5k's but I think they would be better to focus software optimization effort on the R10k/R12k (without dumping the older machines of course). >IRIX development (including tools, etc.) has slowed >dramatically. This approach will only lead to the alienation of their existing customers. So in this scenario, they would lose revenue from the UNIX customers while having to compete with the likes of IBM, Dell, Compaq etc for NT orders. Not a recipe for success in my opinion. I do hope the word you are getting is wrong. I still believe that the move to NT will only distract SGI and add to their development costs. Plus, I believe (and hope) that MS is approaching their zenith - they have offended far too many people (esp. customers and developers). Pushing IRIX on the low-end as a better integrated, better supported Linux-compatible would be better. The growth in Linux is huge. I do not believe it is the solution to all computing problems and I do not religiously believe in the concept of free/open-source software, but Linux is getting into all the places SGI wants to sell to. Sorry, I'm in a bit of a rant mood today :-) Ed
