Northern Telecom Touts New Laser's Possibilities

Northern Telecom Ltd., Ottawa, said it has developed a
high-power laser that can be tuned to generate light at
different wavelengths, a discovery it says could help
increase network capacity to support the explosive
growth of Internet, data, and multimedia traffic. NorTel
said its discovery enables customers significant design
flexibility and cost savings in dense wavelength division
multiplexing, or DWDM, fiber-optic deployment.
Analysts say demand for DWDM technology will
increase as individuals and business try to send more
and more data over the existing long-distance infrastructure. Fiber-optic systems break data into quick
bursts of light representing the zeros and ones of
computer language. Multiplexers place a prism of sorts
in front of the light to split it into many virtual fibers that
can travel down one line.
