Accommodations around Nadi (where the airport is and you get there late at night after a long flight). We stayed at Club Fiji Beach Resort until we were evacuated to West Motor Inn due to the hurricane.
Club Fiji was reasonable and the bures (cabins) comfortable. Food was OK but nothing to write home about. Get in your rent car (we used and recommend Sharma's located in the airport and also downtown Nadi) and check out the Indian restaurant in the strip near the airport. West is a solid hotel with no particular personality to recommend it but it was a good place to ride out the storm. Don't miss the new Hindu temple on the south side of town. Also see the orchids at Garden of the Sleeping Giant.

Somebody's pictures of Wayasewa, aka Wayaleilai (sorry for the misspelling in previous post). Very primitive but a truly fine getaway. Drink kava with the locals, check out the beaches, swim, snorkel & dive, climb the rock behind the village, hang out. This place is favored by European 20-somethings who travel round the world until the credit card is full and then go back home to get a job to pay it off and do it all over again, but everyone gets along OK. Stay in the bures and not in the dorm accommodation. They're primitive enough. You are definitely not on the $700/night island- you're in Fiji. We arranged this part of the trip at Rebuka's (sp?), a travel agency upstairs at the airport. They also stored our excess baggage there during that part of the trip, which was handy.

Spent our last two nights there. Quite luxurious after Wayasewa. Excellent food & great snorkeling just offshore. And be sure and drive further west toward Suva for the eye candy scenery.

Be sure and buy some booze in the duty free on the way in, if you're so inclined. You save a bunch. The local rum is ~$6 and quite good.

The whole 10 day trip ran about $3500. You can spend a lot more, especially if you take inter-island flights or stay in the fancy places.
