The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Standardizes On Cabletron Systems SmartSwitch Router September 14, 1998 08:11 AM ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998-- New Smart Network to facilitate video conferencing while enhancing communications between business units Cabletron Systems CS announced today that The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, a worldwide leader in the tire and rubber industry, has standardized on Cabletron's networking solutions to improve efficiency and reduce costs. "We selected Cabletron based on several criteria, including company profile, technology, world-wide availability, support, and pricing," said Stephen Murphy, manager of corporate telecommunications. "We were impressed with Cabletron's distributed switching architecture, plus we can migrate to Gigabit Ethernet without any major upgrades." The Cabletron Smart Network solution will improve network performance to support bandwidth intensive applications such as LAN-based video conferencing, groupware, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE). Video footage of executive briefings will be transmitted over the network, improving efficiency and reducing travel costs. In addition, the company's training department will deliver course instruction through video conferencing to associates across the campus headquarters location. "We predict that video conferencing will catch on here internally the way that the Internet has in the outside world," said Kim Smith, project manager at Goodyear. The combination of SmartSwitch Routers and SmartSwitch 6000s will also support Goodyear's implementation of advanced software applications such as SAP R/3, which handles ordering, billing, production, shipping, and other business processes. Goodyear's Corporate Telecommunications department will utilize the improved network to support future computer/telephony integration, and engineering groups will use the increased bandwidth for Computer Assisted Design (CAD) of advanced new products such as the EMT Run Flat automotive tire.
