Alcatel's DWDM Address Underserved Metro Market BusinessWire, Monday, September 14, 1998 at 09:07 ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--Capitalizing on its DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) metro innovations, Alcatel is introducing its OPTINEX(TM) 1640 LXT (Local Exchange Terminal) September 14-16, 1998 at the 1998 National Fiber Optics Engineers Conference (NFOEC) in Orlando. "Although the metro market has been slow to adopt DWDM, we believe 1999 will be the start of a tremendous market upswing," Ken Lewis, Senior Vice President of Alcatel USA's transmission division. "Alcatel is leveraging our understanding of the long-haul and metro markets to help carriers prepare for new wavelength-based services." In fact, the OPTINEX 1640 LXT is based on the same platform as Alcatel's OPTINEX(TM) 1640 OADM used for long haul applications. Using the same platform offers two major advantages. First, as the distinction between short and long haul carriers is fading and carriers are benefiting from a product family that offers a common platform. Second, amplifiers from the OPTINEX 1640 OADM can be implemented on the OPTINEX 1640 LXT to solve high fiber loss challenges. This feature is especially important for carriers like incumbent local exchange carriers that use mature standard single mode fibers. The OPTINEX 1640 LXT is Alcatel's DWDM product that has been cost optimized for the metro market. The span distance in the metro market is typically 65 Km or shorter, providing multiple opportunities for cost reduction. The product eliminates amplifiers for short span small loss scenarios, lower cost modulation techniques are used, lower power consumption is achieved and it supports a smaller footprint. Along with reducing costs, the OPTINEX 1640 LXT will enable carriers to more easily migrate to the optical layer. The product's bit rate independent transponders will support services like ATM, IP, and frame relay directly across the DWDM system. The OPTINEX 1640 LXT's optical ring switch will operate essentially like existing SONET rings and automatically reroute bandwidth. With optical rings, though, switching will occur at the optical layer and route around fiber cuts and across network failures. As the optical layer evolves, Alcatel's OPTINEX product line fosters economically-streamlined networks and a greater range of services. A world leader in telecommunications systems and equipment, as well as related cables and components activities, Alcatel operates in over 130 countries. Alcatel provides complete solutions and services to operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers, ranging from backbone networks to user terminals.
