Very unlikely that ASND would make a play for CIEN. In fact its very unlikely that anyone will make a play for CIEN in the near future. This company has to get its business in order. The CEO likely turned down a second reduced offer from TLAB that he felt would undervalue CIEN. Way too much uncertainty about CIEN for any responsible management to make the size offer Nettles would find appropriate. He believes in his company, but right now, no one else does. Better for a CSCO or ASND to pay a higher price and get a robust business in 6-12 months, than to speculate about the business, and pay a cheap price.

As far as working "closely" with Pirelli, I'm sure thaey would welcome working just as closely with CIEN or LU or any other DWDM provider. Forget about camps. ASND will work with any and all DWDM companies if they choose to not be the provider themselves. In fact I would love to see ASND partner with CIEN too.

At one point, not too long ago, I posted here that ASND/TLAB/CIEN would make a great combo. TLAB would have had to be the facilitator of this. Extreme focus on the carrier space with everything from backbone to edge; future product and legacy product; great sales coverage too. Obviously no chance of this happening now, unless ASND goes to 70 (on its own) and buys the other two guys. :)
