Teleglobe Lights Up Hollywood - World's First High-Speed Fiber Optic Video Network Links Los Angeles, New York, London, Montreal And Vancouver 09/14/98 Canada NewsWire (Copyright Canada NewsWire 1998)
AMSTERDAM AND MONTREAL, Sept. 14 /CNW/ - Teleglobe announced today that it has lit up its Los Angeles international television switching center, the latest access point on its high speed Millennium(sm) fiber optic broadcast network. The Los Angeles link complements Teleglobe's existing network which connects video switches in London, New York, Montreal and Vancouver. With these links among five of the world's leading video production sites, Teleglobe's Millennium(sm) network is the industry's first broadcast-quality video link using the latest in digital compression technology and the Asynchronous Transfer Mode high-speed protocol.
Teleglobe made the announcement in Amsterdam at the IBC98 conference, an annual event serving the international television and future media markets.
''Teleglobe remains the sole provider of MPEG -2 4:2:2 digital broadcast transmission over ATM, ranking as the number one provider of transatlantic fiber optic based broadcast services,'' said Paolo Guidi, president and CEO, Teleglobe Communications Corporation. ''The Los Angeles site has now put Hollywood on-line for video applications, including live news, sports and entertainment events, tape feeds and transportation of dailies between studios and far-flung production houses.'' Teleglobe also plans on opening additional international television switching centers in Europe and the U.S. within the next year.
Teleglobe unveiled Millennium(sm), a technological breakthrough that sends video formatted in the MPEG -2 4:2:2 standard for high definition and digital TV (HDTV, DTV) over a bandwidth-efficient ATM backbone, in January. The service enables broadcasters to transport multiple, high-quality channels on the same amount of bandwidth currently required by a single channel in analog mode.
Millennium offers unprecedented quality, superior network security and higher clarity than satellite broadcast transmission - all at a significant cost savings over currently available analog technology. Millennium's ATM transport provides nearly unlimited bandwidth and channelization options compared to existing analog routes. Unlike standard broadcast transmissions that can be intercepted from satellite transmission for unauthorized use, Millennium sends digitized pictures in ATM cells over terrestrial and undersea facilities.
Teleglobe now ranks among the world's top three providers of intercontinental digital television transmission services. The corporation supports the broadcast transmission needs of nearly 80 of the industry's leading television broadcasters, including ABC, BBC, CBC, CBS, CNN, the Ethnic American Broadcasting Company, ESPN, Fuji-TV and TV New Zealand.
Teleglobe provides a full range of international broadcast transmission services on a full-time, events services and occasional use basis. Its broadcast services employ the latest technology, such as digital compression and upgraded earth stations. Teleglobe broadcast services are supported by three North American teleports that link with INTELSAT, PANAMSAT, Orion, Telecom 2A and all U.S. and Canadian satellite systems. Teleglobe is a signatory to INTELSAT in North America and an INTELSAT direct access customer in the United Kingdom. Additionally, its transatlantic broadcast services leverage the massive capacity of Globesystem Atlantic, a high-speed fiber optic submarine cable between North America and Europe.
Teleglobe is recognized as a world leader in intercontinental telecommunications. The Teleglobe network includes submarine cable and satellite facilities linking North America with over 240 countries and territories, meeting the global connectivity needs of established and emerging wireline and wireless carriers from around the world, as well as those of Internet service providers, multinational corporations and broadcasters. The company ranks as the second largest owner of international undersea fiber optic cable systems. Teleglobe Inc. is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the Montreal Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol ''TGO.''
