I'm confused:

1) Ripu wrote a post stating that an analyst claimed that computers are all becoming commodities.

2) I wrote saying that I disagreed with this idea that computers were becoming commodities.

3) You wrote that "If you feel that strongly, buy Dell".

4) I asked "why should I buy Dell?", considering I strongly disagree that computers are becoming commodities.

5) You stated that Dell will hold up well as computers are becoming commodities.

I guess you are therefore NOT encouraging me to buy Dell, as I don't believe that computers will become commodities.

<Next year, all pc's will be commodities especially at the retail level.>

Such a broad statement. I have purchased numerous computers in my lifetime, both over the Internet, and through more traditional means. In no case has price ever been the sole factor in my decision. If it was, the world would be full of Acer's and Packard Bell's. No check that, it would be full of no-name computers put together in some warehouse in Mexico.

If you are saying that competition will drive down prices next year, I would tend to agree. But my definition of a "commodity" is a product so generic, that to the buyer, there is no difference in value and therefore no difference in price. Hard amber durum from a farmer's field is a good example of a commodity.

Is this really what you are claiming will happen to computers next year? That people will stop caring whether they buy a Gateway or an Acer computer? I find it hard to believe that anyone would think this.
