JeffG,

I am sure that you need at least one cookie set when you enter your login and password, but since you turned cookies off after you logged in, this explains why you have not had one. SI uses cookies to know "who is it at this browser?" so that they can direct messages to you etc.

Cookies are not a way of gaining access to your disk drive. There is a simple HTML command which sets a cookie and another which reads the contents of a cookie when required. I'm not sure about security holes in Java which might allow this, but I don't think there are any (found).
