Michael: Excellent summation.

If I may quote the middle of your post (and then make a short comment):
"..today, speed of dissemination and the ability to be anonymous have far outstripped the ability to call anyone to task and back up their statements. Gullibility has not decreased in the face of this incredible volume of info, so those who feel "taken" want to lash out for having followed unsubstantiated advice. The flip side of this is
that I, as an individual small investor, can play the game with the big boys on a much more level field than previously, and my sources of information have, month by month, exponentially increased over what had been available to me before ecommerce."

Yesterday, I went to a ballgame with my best friend, a Senior VP at one of the top brokerages in the World. Driving home, we were discussing the Market (this made the trip a legitimate write-off for me). One comment from my friend that stuck in my mind. He said every big-name expert who claims they know what's going on and that they are reacting to substantiated information is really just full of crap. In his opinion, it's the same cockiness that caused so many of the pros to get their backsides burned off in Russia. They went for what they perceived to be easy points.. NOT!
So yes. Gimme everybody's input combined with e-speed and than add a large scoop of "Gut."
As far as protecting ourselves from deliberate misinformation, you're right, nothing is close to foolproof, but when a big name at Oppenheimer or Smith Barney or CNBC makes a public pronouncement, at least I know who's doing the talking. A verifiable public identity does not guarantee accurate information or prevent irrational stock movement based on that information. It does say, "this is really who I am - I'm not bashing or pumping from pure Cyberspace. So here's my take - take it or leave it." Not perfect, but it makes it a little tiny bit harder for Mr.CyberMacy to bash & trash poor Mr. CyberGimbel and not be found out. I'll take every little tiny bit I can get.
Thanks again for the great post.
Regards,
Wally
