HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--

than the next three competitors combined.
--New models of the ProLiant 5500 server, ProLiant 1600 and
1850R.

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ - news), the PC server market share leader, today became the first company to ship two million servers - more than the company's nearest three competitors combined. The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. purchased Compaq's two millionth server, a new Compaq ProLiant 5500 with Pentium(R) II Xeon technology.

''We're a major player in the insurance and financial services arena, and to maintain our competitive position, our standards for quality and reliability are as high as our customers' expectations of us,'' said Jack Crawford, Group Senior Vice President of Information Technology at The Hartford. ''We've been a Compaq customer
since the original SystemPro, the industry's first x-86-based server announced by Compaq in 1989. Compaq has always exceeded our rigorous standards. Knowing that Compaq has reached this unprecedented
milestone of shipping two million servers means that we can continue to rely on Compaq to produce the best performing and most reliable servers in the world.''

After shipping one million ProLiant, ProSignia and SystemPro servers in seven years, Compaq shipped its second million in less than two years-not including server shipments from Digital and Tandem. With Digital and Tandem now part of the company, Compaq is well on its way to shipping another million servers in a fraction of the time.

''Compaq's heritage of leadership in industry-standard servers is proudly reflected in this two-millionth server milestone,'' said Mary McDowell, Vice President and General Manager, Industry Standard Server Division, Compaq Computer Corporation. ''I look forward to serving customers with the next million servers, which will extend Compaq's lead in delivering excellent performance, superior availability and manageability, and outstanding value.''

ProLiant 5500 Combines Performance with Value

Compaq today also announced worldwide new models of the Compaq ProLiant 5500, providing a breakthrough for performance and value in enterprise computing. The highly successful ProLiant 5500 is now
available with up to four Intel 400 MHz Pentium II Xeon processors and Compaq's breakthrough Wide-Ultra2 Array Controller, the first member of Compaq's Wide-Ultra2 SCSI family. The ProLiant 5500 provides high
levels of next-generation performance, space-efficient design and superb manageability and reliability.

''The ProLiant 5500 is the ideal choice for customers who require an affordable server without compromising performance,'' said McDowell. ''This server has been designed to take advantage of the speed and
performance gains made possible by Intel's highest-performing Xeon processor and the enhanced data availability and manageability offered by Compaq's Smart Array 3200 controller. The ProLiant 5500 gives
customers the reliability they're looking for at a very competitive price.''

A ProLiant 5500 with four 400 MHz Pentium II Xeon processors with 1 MB of cache per processor achieved 17,715.90 transactions per minute (tpmC) at just $21.71/tpmC. Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 and Windows NT
Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition were used to achieve the results.

Compaq leads the industry in designing high performance, space-efficient servers that address the challenges of multi-server, data-center environments. The enhancements to the 7U (12.25 inch) form factor ProLiant 5500 advance this lead by giving customers more performance without sacrificing valuable data center floor space.

The ProLiant 5500 supports up to four 400 MHz Pentium II Xeon processors with 512K or optional one megabyte L2 Cache, 4 GB ECC-buffered EDO memory providing greater performance in memory-intensive applications, and the dual-peer bus architecture eliminating the need for bus I/O balancing. Ideal for clustered
environments, the ProLiant 5500 gives customers the option of using internal or external storage with an internal storage capacity of 127.4 GB and maximum SCSI external storage capacity of 1.75 TB or maximum Fibre Channel external storage capacity of 9.73 TB.

For fault tolerance, the ProLiant 5500 offers customers redundant fans and redundant hot-plug power supplies. The ProLiant 5500 combines all of these features with superior expansion and management capabilities to deliver outstanding value while lowering ownership costs for enterprise computing environments.

The ProLiant 5500 is designed to take advantage of Compaq's new Smart Array 3200 high capacity RAID controller, which, when used in conjunction with Compaq's Wide-Ultra2 hard drives, can support data transfer rates of up to 80 MB/sec per channel. The high-performance controller includes an On-Line Capacity Expansion feature that enables users to add hard drives without powering down the storage subsystem or server as well as drive roaming and variable drive striping.

ProLiant 1600 and ProLiant 1850R Offer Latest Processing Technology

Compaq is now offering ProLiant 1850R and ProLiant 1600 servers with Intel's Pentium II 450 MHz processors. The ProLiant 1600 is designed for workgroup and remote site environments where manageability and reliability are key factors in the purchasing process. Ideal for critical workgroup applications, the ProLiant 1600 features
hot plug drives and an optional hot plug redundant power supply. For an additional level of uptime, the ProLiant 1600 is Compaq cluster certified.

The recently announced ProLiant 1850R is the industry's first space saving, full-featured rack server. The server's innovative space-saving 3U (5.25 inch) design satisfies customer requirements for performance, functionality and serviceability in space-constrained data center and remote site environments.

Space-Efficient Rackmount Monitor Technology

Compaq's new Flat Panel Monitor Rackmount TFT450R utilizes Compaq's 14.5-inch viewable Flat Panel Monitor to provide exceptional screen performance in a space-saving 2U (3.5 inch) form factor which allows the monitor to be neatly tucked away in a retractable drawer in the rack cabinet when not in use.

Compaq SmartStart and Insight Manager 4.2

Compaq's SmartStart 4.2 operating system integration tool now offers full installation support for Novell's NetWare 5 operating system. Insight Manager 4.2, Compaq's remote desktop and server monitoring software, now provides hardware support for Compaq Alpha and ProLiant NT Alpha servers, in addition to software
management support for Microsoft Windows 98, and the SCO UnixWare 7 and Novell NetWare 5 operating systems.

Leading Edge Storage Technology for the Enterprise

Building upon continued advances in the enterprise storage marketplace, Compaq also announced today:

Enhancements to Compaq's Fibre Channel Storage System. New features that further reduce system bottlenecks and improve connectivity, and support even greater transmission distances.
Compaq ProLiant Storage System Model UE. A single bus external storage system that is part of the ProLiant Storage System/U family, offering high storage capacity, high availability and high data performance (Wide-Ultra SCSI-3). The Model UE provides greater drive support than ever before in a single bus storage system, up to twelve 1 inch or eight 1.6 inch drives.
Compaq DLT 15-Cartridge Library Model 20/40. Priced to replace the previous 15/30 model, this model
offers superior performance and, when combined with the RAID (RAID 0,1,5) and Virtual Library software
functions, will allow large databases to be backed up in a shorter backup window with a minimum of
administrative effort.
Storage Management Solutions Program Version 2. Provides customers with complete, integrated, and
tested tape storage solutions. In the event of technical support problems with strategic partner software
applications, users only need to make a single call to Compaq for complete assistance.

Tony and thread,

Below are exerpts from Ralphie A's column today. Please note that this report was issued in the am before today's market actions were known:

Last week a mini-trading range materialized between 7400 low and 8100 high (DJIA) and 940 low and 1030 high (S&P 500). - The stock market absorbed considerable bad news and did so within its aforementioned trading range and now the stage is set for a good intermediate term rally. - There is enough internal momentum to carry both the DJIA and S&P 500 above the top end of their respective near term trading ranges (above 8100 and above 1030). - If we are correct, then this anticipated near term rally could carry these two important averages back to their previous secondary resistance levels: 8400/8800 on the Dow and 1060/1105 on the S&P 500. - This near term rally that we expect should be used as a time to trade, invest and even to lighten up.
