I have seen
every drive in a server be fried by one surge, more than once.

Ah, yes, now I see where you're coming from. This is
indisputably true.
In fact, I just had lightening fry my server (though the
mirrored disks survived, mercifully). In this respect
I agree 100 percent.

BUT I don't think that's what Dave is trying to protect against
here. If it is, you're right. But I think we're talking at
cross purposes. Also Dave
and I were talking at cross purposes when he was talking
about performance and I was talking about fault tolerance.
As I believe you said at TAOTL, we agree on a lot more than
it seems because the medium promotes misunderstanding.

Still, if the thread will permit the philosophical aside,
I think this is a healthy turn of events, because we have
to express ourselves reasonably in writing here, and there's
an indelible record of it. It's a partial return to the
written exchanges of our past in which the ability to
express one's thoughts clearly in writing was a
prerequisite to educated communication. I think "partial"
because we now have the luxury of more or less instant
clarification. Nevertheless, it's a healthy development, and
a great plus for the internet IMO. Take THAT, technophobes <g>.
