CAMBRIDGE, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--Smallworldwide plc SWLDY today announced that New York City's Department of City Planning (DCP) has selected Smallworld's spatial resource planning (SRP) software through the company's United States-based subsidiary, Smallworld Systems, Inc.

The contract includes software licenses, training and services for upgrading the city's existing information systems that the planning department uses to maintain massive, complex geographic databases supporting dozens of applications throughout the city government. The upgraded system will use Smallworld's leading technology for the management of spatial information working in conjunction with relational database management software from Oracle Corporation ORCL . Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

I don't worry about bandwidth for businesses. Many ISPs, alternative
telcos, and wireless outfits are looking to businesses as their
heavy hitters - they may debate whether 50% or 80% of consumers will be within the reach of very high speed connections in 1-2 years, but they consider both businesses and high-density, high-end residential buildings lucrative and immediate markets. They're probably right.
