Eckhard Pfeiffer Discusses Partnership Benefits at Novell's CIO Forum

Compaq Computer Corporation, the NetWare marketshare leader, today announced that all ProLiant and ProSignia servers now shipping are certified by Novell to run the NetWare 5 operating system-which was developed and optimized on Compaq servers.

Compaq also announced today activeAnswers(tm) for NetWare 5, the computer hardware industry's only online resource for NetWare 5 customers. This new, free area of activeAnswers was co-developed with Novell to help Compaq customers and channel partners smoothly deploy and migrate to NetWare 5.

These announcements strengthen Compaq's leadership in deploying NetWare systems in the enterprise. According to Novell, Inc. corporate research, Compaq today holds 35 percent of NetWare marketshare--more than twice its nearest competitor--and 65 percent of GroupWise installations. Compaq is also the leading server vendor and provider of storage products to NetWare customers.

Speaking from Novell's NetWare 5 launch event in San Francisco, Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq's President and Chief Executive Officer, discussed the benefits of Compaq's 12-year partnership with Novell, including present and future technology innovation designed to ease customer deployment and integration of Novell products on Compaq ProLiant servers.

"Compaq and Novell built the infrastructure for PC networking, and together we are delivering the advanced solutions our customers require in the expanding world of inter-networked computing," said Pfeiffer. "No other vendor understands the needs of NetWare customers better than Compaq. We have more than one million servers running NetWare today. And we are working closely with Novell to make sure that we jointly deliver the best solutions to customers implementing NetWare 5."

"Compaq has again demonstrated its leadership in the NetWare market by offering customers certified hardware platforms and innovative migration tools for NetWare," said Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO, Novell, Inc. "Today's announcement highlights Compaq's commitment to Novell, our joint customers, and our network of channel partners." Computer Industry's Only NetWare 5-Focused Online Resource Goes Live

Today Compaq officially launched the computer hardware industry's only NetWare 5-focused online resource. This free service is available at Compaq's activeAnswers Web site. Compaq activeAnswers enables Compaq solution partners and self-integrating end users to efficiently plan, deploy, and operate standards-based computing solutions. Compaq and Novell jointly designed activeAnswers for NetWare 5 to reduce the time and costs associated with upgrading and deploying NetWare on Compaq's ProLiant servers.

activeAnswers for NetWare 5 is accessible through the activeAnswers lobby at www.compaq.com/activeanswers. The site is comprised of special NetWare 5 migration tools and information designed to ease the job of NetWare 5 deployment using Compaq hardware.

"With what we have learned about the free resource site on activeAnswers, Compaq has proven its commitment to Novell and really stepped up to the plate, simplifying the migration to NetWare 5 for customers," said Gregory Uehling, Executive Vice President of Devise Associates, Inc., a 14-year Novell Platinum Partner and Reseller. "With Compaq's server leadership and Novell's unique position in the enterprise operating system market, activeAnswers will truly help in the configuration process by speeding the time to successful deployment." Server Functionality Optimized for NetWare 5

With these announcements, Compaq expands its unique engineering relationship with Novell, which provides support for innovative technologies such as the full integration of PCI Hot Plug into NetWare 5. PCI Hot Plug allows NetWare users to replace, upgrade, or add Network Interface Controllers (NIC), disk drives or disk controllers while the server is still running, providing additional levels of availability to NetWare customers. Compaq ProLiant 6500 and 7000 models currently support this feature, as well as the combination of power, performance, ease of use and manageability that is inherent throughout the ProLiant and ProSignia server lines.

With the newest version of Compaq's intelligent tool for server configuration, SmartStart 4.2, Compaq has worked closely with Novell to improve the installation experience for NetWare 5 in an effort to grow the current one million unit installed base of Compaq ProLiant and ProSignia servers running Novell software. Compaq server customers can enjoy the intelligent, simplified installation of NetWare, purchased from an authorized Novell Reseller or through Novell's volume purchasing programs. The SmartStart CD, which ships at no additional cost with all Compaq servers, contains all of the utilities and drivers that users need to rapidly deploy NetWare 5 on Compaq servers.

In further support, Compaq Insight Manager 4.2, Compaq's remote desktop and server management software, has added support for Compaq ProLiant and ProSignia servers running NetWare 5. Insight Manager provides customers with comprehensive monitoring and alerting capabilities for maximum control over critical systems in a distributed enterprise environment.

Today's announcements cover all the bases for customers looking to deploy NetWare solutions from planning and purchasing to deployment and maintenance of NetWare servers. The Web site can be viewed at compaq.com. Company Background
